My Teacher

When Charles Beare returned from working with Simone F Sacconi in New York in the early 1960s, he taught Reiner Schumann Sacconi's method of positioning and shaping a bassbar. Reiner showed Charles his bassbar shapes for approval for 2 years.

Reiner was known for his excellence in bassbar, neckgraft and set-up work - his reputation was that instruments set up by him didn't need any further adjustments.

Reiner taught me this same method of positioning and shaping a bassbar and I am glad to say he approved of this PowerPoint presentation. I'm relieved the 17 years of self-employment have not distorted my memory of the bassbar shape he taught me!

This Zoom lecture totals 1 hour and 6 minutes

"Meticulous instruction given by Iris on location, placement, fitting and shaping of a violin bassbar. With a nod to the Greats, Sacconi and Charles Beare, we are drawn into the precision needed for this tricky job. Informative throughout, it challenges us to work to the best of our ability."

"If you’ve ever been uncertain about the technique of bassbar fitting, Iris will set you right. With her customary precision, she takes us through establishing the position, choosing the wood, fitting and shaping, taking into account any problems thrown up by dealing with a non-standard instrument. Iris's no-nonsense method really works. There is also information about bridge fitting including choice of wood and cut, and soundpost fitting. This video will be invaluable for all."
